Q&A with Liza Pavlakos

Exclusive Trusted Magazine Q&A with Liza Pavlakos, Survivor, Entrepreneur & Keynote Speaker.

How could you describe your career path in a few words?

My journey began at 16 when I left home to take care of myself. Starting with a catering business, I later worked as an event promoter, learning about the industry. By 22, I organized events like Miss India International Beauty Pageant, drawing crowds of up to 4000 people.

I then ran a restaurant, bar, and opened five tailoring stores. In 2016, I became a keynote speaker, winning awards, including Top 8 globally for suicide prevention and the Toastmasters Golden Gavel Award. What matters most to me is the impact I have on people—I touch their hearts with my story. Today, I'm an international keynote speaker and founder of Mind Hub Directory, a mental health platform connecting people with practitioners. Despite the challenges, my passion led me to my purpose. I'm happy doing work I love, inspiring others just as I inspire myself.

What was your most challenging experience and it has changed your mindset?

Leaving home at 16 was really tough, especially dealing with the difficult experiences and trauma on the streets without proper adult support. I faced different kinds of trauma, including violent attacks, which really hurt me. However, I believe that with inner strength and a determination to love oneself, we can slowly but surely change our lives for the better.

I worked really hard to become an entrepreneur, and now, at 47, I can say that my entrepreneurial journey has taught me that, no matter what challenges we face, we have the power to reshape our lives for the better.

When you get surprised by unusual or uncertain context, what do you think?

What surprises me is when people assume that, as a speaker, my life should be all figured out, free from mistakes. But the truth is, we all make mistakes because we're human. Mistakes help us learn and grow. No one is perfect, and we all face tests in life in various ways. Everyone navigates their journey differently. I've realized that I shouldn't be surprised by anything in life. Instead, I should walk my own path in my own way, just as everyone should. Let's live without expectations and judgment, make mistakes, but learn and grow from them.

Based on your experience, what’s the key success factor for a female leader / manager?

The key to success is discovering your purpose. Once you find it, enjoy your work. When your work is enjoyable, it turns into a hobby and passion. This creates a happier workplace for you and those around you. Lead with empathy, understanding that everyone has a unique journey. When you show empathy, people will respond positively, making the workplace healthier and happier, and allowing you to lead effectively.
